Homer Simpson inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. D’oh!

Although it’s no longer “America’s favorite pastime,” baseball is still at the heart of the county’s popular culture and, along those lines, its Hall of Fame just hit a home run by adding Homer Simpson to its ranks.

On Saturday, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, added the animated character to its list of greats, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the episode “Homer at Bat,” which aired in February of 1992.

Not only did an actual costumed Homer show up to accept the award, but the organization even came up with an award plaque which includes an elaborate inscription.

“Inept safety inspector turned citywide softball hero. Right fielder led Springfield nuclear plant to city championship game, then sacrificed his body to win it all,” reads the plaque image, which the Hall of Fame shared on Instagram.

“Nearly supplanted by lineup of all-world superstar ringers, came through in a pinch — and came to in time for the next episode. Girthy right-handed hitter powered many a mighty wallop during celebrated 1992 season with ‘Wonderbat’ — his secret weapon. Lack of mobility in the field was no match for moves atop the dugout. Found fame as Bush League mascot phenom, parlaying his ‘elephant walk’ into a taste of the majors. Unacquainted with scientific concepts, only isotopes of which he was aware played at Duff Stadium, where uncanny knowledge of Southwestern palate exposed team’s impending move to Albuquerque.”

If you weren’t around for that classic episode, you can find probably find snippets of it online if you look hard enough.

In the meantime, bask in the glory of everyone’s accidental hero, Homer Jay Simpson, the pride of Springfield and now a peer right alongside baseball’s greats.
